Five killed as fire guts houses in popular Nairobi slum

Five killed, hundreds left homeless as fire guts houses in Mukuru Kwa Reuben slums in Nairobi, on Saturday.

According to reports, the fire might have been caused by an electrical surge. While there were five confirmed casualties during the incident, property worth millions of shillings was destroyed.

Firefighters from Nairobi County Government had a difficult time putting out the fire because of the inaccessible paths.

This incident comes barely a fortnight after 46 houses were reduced to ashes in the same slum.

The slum chairman David Kiaire revealed that the fire started around 1 am when three young men who were sharing a single room disagreed.

Reports indicate that the youth fled without raising an alarm when fire engulfed their room.Looters took advantage of the situation to cart away goods.

In 2018, two children were burnt to death at Mukuru slums when fire razed down their house.

Their mother had forgotten to put out the candle when she left the house.
