Legend and former Chelsea player John Terry claims Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri should have forced Kepa Arrizabalaga to come off during Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.
The under fire Blues boss attempted to substitute the Spaniard – who had previous received treatment for cramp only for Kepa to refuse to leave the pitch.
Sarri eventually backed down and Willy Caballero returned to the bench as Kepa remained between the sticks for the penalty shootout.
Although the 24 year old kept out Leroy Sane’s spot kick, Raheem Sterling converted the decisive penalty to earn Pep Guardiola’s side victory at Wembley to claim the first cup in the season.
“Once your number goes up you have to come off and show a bit of respect,” said Chelsea legend Terry, who was working as a pundit on Sky Sports .“Deal with that after. That’s the last thing the players want.
“It leaves Sarri in a tough place – I’m surprised he didn’t force him to come off.”It’s a cloud over a really good Chelsea performance especially with what’s happened of late, as the results and performances haven’t been good enough. It’s disappointing – let’s see what happens now.”
He added: “If I was in there [dressing room] I’d be expecting the manager to come in and deal with it instantly.”
“In that situation there was a big misunderstanding caused by the radio,” he told Sky Sports . “I understood there was a problem and we needed a change. I didn’t find out until the doctor arrived to the bench after a few minutes.
“It was a big misunderstanding. I understood the goalkeeper had cramp and for me he was unable to go to penalties but the problem was not cramp so he was able to go to penalties.”
