Kenya Mourns An Athletic Legend

Kenya has lost an Olympic legend, Nyandika Maiyoro, who first competed for the country in the Olympics at the 1956 in Melbourne, Australia. Previously, he had won the 1953 3000m at the Indian Ocean Games hosted in Madagascar.

the sporting fraternity is mournung his death which happened on the 24, Feb, at the Christa Marianne Hospital in Kisii. Maiyoro’s health has been failing in recent times, confining him to hospital bed.

His son, Kennedy Nyantika, has since confirmed Maiyoro’s death, revealing the father had breathing problems before sinking into a coma.

“Mzee has left us. I’m now preparing his body for the morgue,” he divulged to Daily Nation on Sunday night.

Initially, his family had appealed to the government for financial assistance to cater for the Olympian’s medical bill. Until his demise, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and officials from National Olympic Committee of Kenya had pledged to help the family with the bill.
