Langata Prison counting losses after an overnight inferno

Nairobi West Prison staff quarters have suffered great losses after fire set ablaze almost all their houses. The fire started at round 10pm. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. Two fire engines were dispatched to contain the fire by the county administration.

This comes after a similar incident happened in 27th April 2014 where more than 60 families were left homeless after their houses were destroyed during a fire in the same prison quarters. 38 houses were razed by the afternoon inferno while more than 12 had to be demolished to save them from being consumed by the fire.

Property of unknown value was also destroyed with a newly married couple said to have lost all their wedding presents in the incident. No one was injured during the incident which happened while many families were attending church.

The cause of the fire was however not yet established but four gas cylinders which had exploded were said to have fuelled the inferno.
