Sonko in trouble for awarding tender worth Millions to unqualified garbage collection company

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is now on the spot for wrong reasons.New emerging sources indicate that the Sonko, awarded a two-year garbage collection contract worth KSh 273 million to a private company without following due process.

This came to light when the CEO of Aende Group Limited company, Derrik Aende, was summoned by the sectoral committee on environment and natural resources regarding the multi-million shilling tender.

While appearing before the committee on February 19, 2019, Aende disclosed her company was awarded the contract in August 2018, two months after its registration, in contravention of procurement laws. Aende, who admitted having received KSh 25 million out of the KSh 273 million for the contract, further revealed his firm was not experienced in garbage collection but had experienced personnel.

The committee led by Nairobi county assembly minority whip, Peter Imwatok, put to task the Aende Group boss to explain how his unqualified company managed to qualify for such lucrative tender when there were five other companies.

“How did you manage to get this tender when your company was just two months old after its registration, ” Imwatok posed.

The company’s officials are expected to appear before the committee again next week for further interrogation.

For a company to be awarded such a tender in Nairobi county, it must have at least five years work experience.
