Manchester United reportedly make breakthrough in bid to keep striker at Old Trafford long term

Manchester United have made a breakthrough in their attempts to keep Marcus Rashford at the club long term.

Local hero Rashford has been in brilliant form since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge of the club in December, scoring eight goals in his last 15 matches.

Rashford has two years left to run on his current deal and has the option of a one-year extension option.

But according to the Daily Mirror, Rashford is ready to sign a new contract which will keep him at the club potentially until 2025 after discussions which aim to make him one of the better paid players at Old Trafford.

Rashford has been enjoying his football under Solskjaer

It is understood executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will announce a new contract for the striker within the next few weeks.

There were doubts surrounding the 21-year-old’s future under Jose Mourinho and Rashford was even linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

However, since the Portuguese was sacked, Rashford has started in all but two of the 13 games, with one of them coming in an FA Cup tie against Championship side Reading.

The new deal could see Rashford on a similar wage to Anthony Martial

He has been used as a central striker ahead of Romelu Lukaku under the Norwegian and Rashford’s representatives have indicated his willingness to stay, on improved terms which will take him closer to Anthony Martial’s salary.
