CS Balala Quizzed, Denies Engaging in Any Deal with ASTA

After failing to appear before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Monday on grounds of attending official duties in Kisumu, the Tourism Cabinet Secretary was today grilled by another committee.

CS Balala is required to answer questions over Sh100 million payments made during the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) Destination Expo that was held in Nairobi in 2017. The commission wants to understand under what circumstances Balala spent public money, yet he was not the ministry’s accounting officer. The agency also wants clarification on whether the expo was hosted for one or three days.

While appearing before the committee, Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has denied that he irregularly awarded 100 million shilling tender to the American Society of Travel Agents. He further told the MPs at the National Assembly’s Culture, Tourism and Sports Committee that Kenya had merely partnered with ASTA to host the 2017 tourism conference.
