Newcastle United’s defender Jamaal Lascelles was on Jose Mourinho’s shortlist for potential January signings before he was sacked in December 2018.
Defensive reinforcements were the Portuguese’s primary targets before even the season started with Toby Aldewereld of Tottenham Hotspur, Harry Maguire of Leicester City and Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin all under his watch but all his requests were turned down by the club’s hierarchy.
Mourinho had signed Swedish centre-half Victor Lindelof and Ivorian Eric Bailly and now sources told ESPN FC that the Magpies defender featured in his list for potential arrivals in January. The former Chelsea manager was sacked though in December for a poor season start and replaced by Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who has lifted the club from sixth and 11 points away from when he took over to 4th above Chelsea and Arsenal.
He has managed 10 wins, a draw against Burnley and a loss to PSG in the Champions League round of 16
