Wambui murder probe deepens as police take husband twist

The murder probe of businesswoman Mary Wambui Kamangara is deepening after the investigating team made an about-turn on the whereabouts of the husband at the time of the murder.

The detectives had earlier claimed that Wambui was murdered at a house in Fourways Junction in the presence of her husband, Joseph Karue, where Karue’s mistress Judy Mungai lives. Both Ms Mungai and Mr Karue have been in police cells for a week now in connection with the murder. When they were brought before the court, detectives were allowed by the court to hold them for the prosecution to complete with their investigations. However, they will appear again in court on February 13, when the duo will be expected to take their pleas.

But the murder probe has taken a new dimension, with the investigation officers now saying Wambui’s husband was nowhere near the murder scene. Making the murder puzzle even more complex to unravel, police claim his car was not captured by the CCTV footage at Fourways Junction, it now emerges.

According to police narrative, Karue’s mobile phone records including his car-tracking device, indicate Karue was in Ngong at the time of the killing. The records show he left Ngong at 9pm and drove back to Roysambu and he was nowhere near the crime scene.

Confirming this new twist, the Juja Police Station DCIO Mr Obed Kiio, who is part of the investigation team, said that Safaricom records of call data obtained showed that Wambui’s husband was “nowhere near the scene”.

However, the DCIO said thy have not ruled out any possibility that a third party was controlling Karue’s phone and his car at the time. He further stated that they could not give a conclusive report adding that investigations were still ongoing.

According to Ms Kamangara’s family, the deceased will be laid to rest at her matrimonial home in Mweiga, in line with Kikuyu customs. However, the family said burial preparations have been put on hold and will resume when Mr Karue is released.
