Court detains Kisumu man accused of impersonating William Ruto’s wife

A man accused of impersonating Deputy President William Ruto wife’s, Rachel Ruto, has been produced in court. The suspect, identified as Michael Mito Atito, was arraigned on Monday, January 4, over allegations that he had been masquerading as the DP’s wife on Facebook.

The investigating officer George Chai told court Atito opened a Facebook account claiming he was supporting the less fortune in the society by giving out free motor vehicles that were to be registered in the names of beneficiaries.

The prosecution, however, requested for more more time to complete investigations which include contact members of members of the public who are said to be victims of the scam.

The prosecution also requested the court to conduct identification parade where the victims can be able to identity the suspect and others who are still being pursued. In addition, the investigators will be looking into M-pesa account details of the suspect confirming the alleged fraudulent transactions.

Key witnesses who are said to be residing in Kisumu county where the suspect was arrested are also expected to record statements. The accused did not answer to any charges as police brought him under a miscellaneous application. Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe allowed the application and detained the suspect for a period of three days to allow police to conclude the investigations.
