Launch and dump? The tales of Ruto’s stalled projects in Kisii, Nyamira

The slow pace of some development projects launched by Deputy President William Ruto in Kisii and Nyamira counties are raising concerns even as his allies defend him.

Yesterday, a social media user posted a plaque of the alleged stalled Ibeno Campus of the Kenya Medical Training College in Nyaribari.

The foundation stone was laid by the Deputy President in September, 2016 and has not taken off. Yesterday, the Constituency Development Committee defended the project saying the community was in agreement that the site be relocated hence delaying the project.

A member of the committee, Fred Oenga, told Sunday Standard that the construction of the Medical College is ongoing and the site of the foundation stone should never be contentious.

“The foundation stone was laid at the outpatient centre but after lengthy consultations of all stakeholders it was decided that the KMTC use the outpatient centre as classes and then build a treatment centre on another location.

More classes will be built on the laid foundation stone,” said Oenga.

In October last year, the DP laid a similar foundation stone for the construction of Bomachoge Chache Branch of the KMTC.

Area MP Alfa Miruka said they have already put up a wall and the construction of the administration block is already underway.

In Kitutu Masaba Constituency in Nyamira County, area MP Shadrack Mose also defended the projects launched by Ruto, saying although they had not started immediately, they will be completed within planned time.

On various occasions while touring the area last year, the DP commissioned Kemera-Kiendege- Emberge- Gachuba- Keumbu road. The contractor is yet to begin road works.

According to the MP, the engineers have cleared the site: “We will be able see its progress in the next one month. They are already moving machinery to the ground. I have been in constant touch with the engineers.”

Ruto had also issued Sh1 million and Sh2 million for Ikonge Primary and Ikonge Secondary respectively during his previous tour of the region. The MP said he had to sit with the community and other political leaders in the area to agree how the money would be spent.

The DP had issued the money in cash as part of a personal donation to the two institutions.
