One foreigner among 12 terror suspects nabbed at Daabab refugee camp

Inspector General (IG) of police, Joseph Boinnet on Tuesday announced that 12 terror suspects had been arrested following a major operation at the Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa county.

The IG revealed that one of the suspects nabbed during the raid was in possession of two foreign passports.

“Twelve terror suspects have been arrested in Dadaab refugee camp,” he revealed.

“One of them has two New Zealand passports in different names,” the police chief added.

He affirmed that the suspects in custody were being probed for terrorism links, but opted not to disclose their connection or lack thereof to the Dusit D2 attack that took place on January 15, 2019.

The police incursion took place at the Dadaab refugee camp, a vast complex which hosts a population of 235,269 registered refugees and asylum seekers as at the end of January 2018.

The camp was established in 1991, to accommodate refugees fleeing the civil war in Somalia.

There are four major camps in Dadaab; Dagahaley, Ifo, Ifo 2 and Hagadera, with most of the residents experiencing the birth of their children as well as grandchildren within the camps.

The camps resemble naturally-grown towns and have developed into commercial hubs connecting north-eastern Kenya and southern Somalia.

The take-down was conducted barely two weeks after the Riverside attack in which 21 people lost their lives.

17 suspects have so far been arraigned in court over the attack.
