Charity Ngilu’s costly mistake in Ukambani that has landed her in hot soup

Just recently, Kitui governor Charity Ngilu joined her other Ukambani counterparts, the Makueni governor Prof Kivutha Kibwana and Machakos governor Alfred Mutua in advocating for Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s quit from Ukambani politics.

They argued that Kalonzo has overstayed in the region’s politics as their kingpin with no any benefit to Ukambani people. They cited that it the Wiper leader should quit and give a chance for other fresh minds to lead the region.

Along this move, the three governors joined together to form a one bloc that will help initiate development projects among the three counties.

However, Ngilu’s move to back Kibwana and Mutua’s move to see Kalonzo out of Ukambani politics has landed her in a big tussle with her Wiper MCAs.

A section of  them have vowed to impeach the Kitui governor when they resume sittings on February 13.

The over 20 MCAs, allied to Wiper party, accused the governor of marginalising parts of the county.

The leaders accused Ngilu of neglecting the larger Mwingi region and parts of Kitui rural and concentrating development projects in Kitui Central Constituency.

The MCAs who spoke at Mwingi Gardens on Saturday where area MP Gideon Mulyungi was issuing bursaries said one of their biggest agenda when they resume next month is to kick Ngilu out.

“We want equitable distribution of county resources. However, since the governor has decided to engage in systematic marginalisation of some parts of the county, we have no choice but to impeach her. She has refused to listen to us and that is why we are going to spare no effort until we have removed her,” said Kyuso MCA Stephen Kivunzi.

Kanziko’s James Munuve accused Ngilu of failing to initiate any significant projects in Kitui South Kitui East.

They also accused the governor of being a lone ranger, initiating projects without involving the county assembly. In this case, they said, priority projects in the semi-arid county, including those that would address water and food shortage have been ignored.

The MCAs are said to have later met at a Mwingi hotel where Ngilu’s impeachment topped their discussions.

They have in the past accused the governor of carrying out dubious projects through which public funds are plundered.

A month ago, they shot down the governor’s supplementary budget which worsened the relationship between the two arms of the county government.

On her part, Ngilu has blamed MCAs for slowing her down by refusing to approve allocation of funds to projects. She also accuses them of being greedy and has hinted at a process of dissolving the county government to pave the way for fresh
