Kirsten Powers wrote in USA Today what is perhaps the most astute response to the recent news about suicide not just Kate Spade’s and Anthony Bourdain’s suicides, but report from the Centers for Disease control and prevention that showed a sharp increase in the number of suicides overall.
The CDC noted that more than half of those who died by suicide did not have a “known mental health condition.” It is also worth noting that male suicide is far more prevalent than female suicide. And there, too, mental illness is not the reason. “The epidemic of depression and despair in the Western World isn’t always caused by our brains,” wrote Powers. “It’s largely caused by key problems in the way we live” and indicates that something is very wrong with the culture.

Awilo Jasiaya got off a vehicle carrying a white colored coffin on Thursday afternoon. Under the influence of alcohol at the time, he could be heard saying he was going to commit suicide and that the coffin was in readiness for his burial.
Awilo reportedly lay in the coffin while shouting continuously, accusing his wife and the mother of his three children for “stressing” him.
He was, however, counseled by his neighbours after which he agreed to return the coffin and seek alternative means of solving his marital problems.
Area administrator Caleb Ombura, who confirmed the incident, said the man was also being sought by the police over reports of assaulting his wife but that he had remained elusive.
The Siaya County resident cited the reason for planning to take his own life as means of getting away from the endless domestic squabbles with his wife who was not in the compound at the time of the incident.
