Traitors?KUPPET opposes KNUT teachers’ strike call

Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) has distance it self from the much hyped teachers strike  saying there are other pertinent issues that need to be addressed.

Laikipia’s KUPPET branch Executive Secretary Ndungu Wangenye has said their members will not participate in the strike and hence asked their members to report to their respecting stations.

He accused KNUT of taking teachers for a ride saying instead it should be talking of other issues such as how they are going to deliver the new CBA, scandal behind the teachers medical cover and stagnation of teachers in the same job group.

Wangenye observed that there was room for dialogue with the TSC and assured parents that learning will not be affected as schools re-opens.

This comes after their rival Kenya Nation Union of Teachers (Knut)stands firm on the looming teachers’ strike citing a raft of issues, including demands that mass transfers be halted, or teachers will refuse to teach. Appraisals and promotions are also stumbling blocks.

Other issues likely to shape teaching and learning as schools reopen whenever they do  include implementation of the new curriculum, and the promise of 100 per cent transition from primary to secondary schools.

Speaking at the same time the KUPPET officials who is also the spokesperson of the Mt. Kenya Teachers Forum welcomed the new curricular saying teacher had no issue with the new development.

He described it as one of the best learning curricular saying it will cater for students who would want to pursue their talents and a tender or young age without necessarily being bombarded with so much learning.

He said the was a scam in waiting saying the books being supplied by the Ministry of Education do not meet the set standards and hence cannot be used to train and prepare students for examinations.

He has demanded that the MoE to ensure it comply with the procurement Act and directives, saying teachers will be forced to look for alternative ways of acquiring the “best” books for learners.

He has called for a thorough audit of the quality of the books they were giving out to schools both in material and in content to ensure that learners get quality materials for learning.
