States intervention to end Murang’a water saga

The government has allocated Sh180 million to sink boreholes and construction of water pans in various parts of Murang’a.

The projects that will be undertaken this financial year geared towards increasing accessibility of clean water to residents especially those living in lower parts, to end their suffering in search of the commodity.

Projects are planned even as Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria says he will continue with fights to ensure he is in control of the defianct water companies.

Water and Sanitation Principal Secretary Mr Joseph Wairagu Irungu said the multimillion-shilling projects are in line with Murang’a County Water Master Plan meant to increase production of the commodity by 80 percent in 2022.

Speaking in Kahuro, the PS called on the public to actively take part in tree planting to conserve environment for purpose of increasing forest cover.

“The iniative started by Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia to assist in restoration of Gatare Forest will continue as part of protecting water towers,” he said.

He said Murang’a county will benefit another Sh4 billion from the French government to increase water production for Kahuti and Gatamathi water and sanitation companies serving Kangema, Kiharu and Mathioya constituencies.

“Aberdare Ranges are source of water consumed in Murang’a and Nairobi thus need to upscale forest conservation measures through tree planting initiatives,” he said.

He added that other parts of the country will also benefit with assistance to boost water production for domestic and irrigation use.

In Laikipia county, he said funds were being sourced to facilitate construction of Kahurura dam to harvest water from Mt Kenya for distribution to the needy residents.

“The government is concerned towards providing of water which is a key pillar towards realising President Uhuru Kenyatta Big Four Agenda that will assist in growth of the economy.
