Liverpool’s Firmino Replacement, TWO Departures, Jurgen Klopp Issue

Liverpool’s excellent first half of the Premier League season sees them sit top of the table on Christmas Day.

The summer signings of Alisson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri have all proved their worth in helping Jurgen Klopp’s side move four points ahead of Manchester City.

The German coach has proved astute in the transfer market since taking over at Liverpool in October 2015, only choosing to spend when necessary.

But with the prospects of Liverpool winning their first top flight title since 1990, Express Sport takes a look at where Klopp may look to do business in the January transfer window to help their chances.

What do Liverpool need in January?
With Liverpool sitting four points above reigning champions Manchester City on Christmas Day, it’s hard to see where Liverpool desperately need to strengthen.

The arrival of Virgil Van Dijk last January coupled together with the incredible performances from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Andrew Robertson have helped give Liverpool the best defensive record in the league.

And the attacking trident of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane has been supplemented by Shaqiri’s super-sub performances.

But with this being the busiest time of the year in terms of scheduling, Klopp may still look to bring on at least one addition in case of another injury crisis.

Gomez, Alexander-Arnold and Matip have all had to deal with injuries these past few weeks, meaning Klopp has had to utilise James Milner at right-back while Nathaniel Clyne has only just returned to full fitness.

A defensive recruit on loan may be the way to go for Klopp if he can find the right man.

The Liverpool boss did just that back in 2016 by signing Steven Caulker on loan, although he made just three appearances.

Also, while Salah and Mane have continued their rich vein of form in front of goal this season, Firmino has struggled to find the net.

The Brazilian’s role in the team has seen him drop to more of a second striker behind Salah this season and with Daniel Sturridge still being used sparingly, Klopp may look at bringing in an out-and-out striker and Timo Werner has been linked with a move in recent weeks.

Who do Liverpool need to get rid of in January?
This is probably where Liverpool will be more active in the January transfer window.

There are a number of first team players who have been cast aside as nothing but bit-part players and they may try to force a move away from Anfield.

Dominic Solanke has been highly praised by Klopp and a big future is expected of him, but the 21-year-old could benefit from regular football so a loan move may be on the cards, with Rangers reportedly interested.

Divock Origi is another striker who has found minutes hard to come by. His dramatic winning strike in the Merseyside derby saw him rewarded with a start three days later against Burnley, but he hasn’t featured since.

A number of teams have been linked with the Belgian striker and if the right bid comes in then Liverpool may let him leave.
