Robbie Fowler has argued that this could be the closest title race for years.
The former Liverpool striker admits he couldn’t see past Manchester City at the start of the season, with the Champions so far ahead of their rivals retaining their crown looked a formality.But he believes he has seen something in recent weeks that makes him feel Liverpool can push all the way, and bring back much needed excitement to the Premier League race.
“If you’d asked me even a few weeks ago I’d have said that City were still massive favourites,” he explained.
“But I think we’ve seen just a hint of a weakness recently. Against Chelsea, against Hoffenheim, and even against Everton they looked a little more human.
“They have a fantastic squad, no doubt, quite possibly the strongest in Europe, and they have a fantastic team, with incredible back up.
“But I just saw that some of those fringe players coming in seemed to be lacking in confidence and lacking an edge.
“That is actually natural for any team when players who haven’t had much action come into the side, but unusual for City.”
Not that Fowler is saying Liverpool will win the title, but he does think their form now is here to stay, and could help them keep the race interesting.
“City’s first XI is still incredible, and if they are all fit and available they will still be difficult to stop,” he added.
“Liverpool have belief though, and they have strength in depth too. They’ve had a few injuries themselves though, so it will be interesting to see how they cope over Christmas.
“If they can get through that still up there, then it will be fascinating, a real title race…and exciting because we’ve not had one for years.”
