James Mugo Ndichu alias Mugo wa Wairimu, a “quack doctor” who was arrested after a TV expose, will remain in police custody after the court set his bail ruling for December 6.
Mugo wa Wairimu, who appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Friday, denied charges of operating a clinic without a licence.
According to the charge sheet, the accused is facing three other counts including carrying out unlawful business as a pharmacist without a license and operating a medical laboratory without a licence.
The quack doctor was arrested after weeks of evading arrest by continuously swapping SIM cards. An expose on his operations that was aired on NTV is what led officers to his location.
On Friday, the quack doctor pleaded with the court to release him on bail pending trial. The Prosecution however opposed his release arguing that he has similar offences pending before court.
Two people: Victor Gathiru Kamunya, 22, and Risper Auma Ogony, 19, alleged to be employees of Mugo Wa Wairimu were previously arraigned at a Nairobi Court and charged with several offences of operating a pharmacy illegally.
Gathiru, a final year medical student at Kenya Medical Training College was admitted at the clinic as an intern and is set to graduate in December 2018.
Auma is a first year student of Procurement Management and Supplies at Kiriri Women’s University in Githurai Nairobi. She is said to have worked part time at the clinic in a bid to raise money for school fees.
