Why Gender Bill Meant to Allow Slay Queens Massage their Way to Parliament Will Fail

The debate surrounding the 2/3 gender bill that has been tabled by Majority leader Aden Duale is currently underway in Parliament. The debate is already gaining momentum with an apparent war of words witnessed among the MPs with the most notable one being between nominated Mp David Ole Sankok and Sabina Chege.

According to Sankok, the proposed bill will only be of great help to Kenyans if it is meant to recognize women with disabilities and the youths. Sankok says that the bill should not be passed to favour non-deserving women like the Slay queens.

“If these gender top up slots will be for our daughters, sisters, wives and mothers then I support it 100% but then if it’s for the slay queens to slay their way into the national assembly then I do have some reservations,” said Sankok.

His remarks did not go well with women legislators who were quick to pick on him. The women, led by Sabina Chege asked the nominated lawmaker to clarify whether he himself is a slay King or not and the favours he gave his political party to have himself nominated to Parlaiment.

“can nominee 001 (David Ole Sankok ) tell this house whether he is a slay king or not and which favors did he give his political party to nominate him…”  said Sabina Chege.

Minority leader John Mbadi on his part has stated that there might be need in future to even have men nominated to the Senate.

The backlash in the National Assembly comes even after Key Political Players in the country led by Uhuru Kenyatta, William Ruto and Raila Odinga urged the parliamentarians to ensure that the bill is passed.

“Raila Odinga urges all members of parliament to stand up for the Constitution and for women by voting for the Bill when it comes up this week,” reads the statement sent by the former premier’s spokesperson Dennis Onyango.

Will all the growing drama around the gender bill, Do you think it shall live to see the light of the day?
