Worry as many candidates score below 100 marks in KCPE

They say that we were not born with the same brains. But how can you explain a situation where one candidate scores 453 marks in an exam and the other does not even manage to reach 100 total marks?

The KCPE results released by Ambassador Amina Mohammed at the Star of the Sea Primary school in Mombasa show that, more than two thousand candidates scored between 0 and 100 marks.

According to Amina, a total of 2, 177 candidates got below 100 marks meaning these pupils got an average of 20% per subject.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday said that there will be 100% absorption to secondary schools, meaning even these candidates with the mediocre marks will be enrolled.

“We know that you did your best. Do not worry even if you get a poor grade because we are going to ensure that you all get a chance join Form One,” Mr Kenyatta said.

The President spoke in Gachororo village in Juja, Kiambu County where he attended church service and presided over a fundraising at the Presbyterian Church of East Africa.

Will children who scored below 100 marks be teachable in secondary schools? And what can explain the poor performance?

Stakeholders have cried about the high cases of teenage pregnancies across the country. Some candidates sat their exams in maternity wards after going into labor hours before the exam. A candidate in Kericho even named her daughter after Amina Mohammed, maybe as a reminder of the exams.

Amina however did not reveal any relationship between the candidates who performed poorly and the results.

Do you believe the government has failed our children?
