The lives of two youngsters, Derrick Ouka and Sharlet Atieno were cut shot this past weekend on Saturday when they drowned while taking selfies at the banks of River Yala in Siaya County.
Although still devastating, the family of the late Derrick Ouka, a Third Year student at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology now bury their son after his body was retrieved just about 100 meters from where the two drowned.
Auka drowned on Saturday alongside Sharlet Atieno, a student at Bondo Technical Training Institute who slipped and fell into the river. Ouka tried to rescue her and it was then when he was carried away by the current.
According to Stephanie, a Kabianga University student who was at the scene, “We burst into laughter but that soon turned into panic when she failed to resurface. Realising how dire the situation was, Mr Ouka jumped into the river in an attempt to rescue a drowning friend,” said Ms. Stephanie.

The body of the late Sharlet Atieno is yet to be discovered three day after the tragic incident. Ouka’s body was taken to Bondo Sub-county Hospital mortuary as the search for Atieno’s body being conducted by local divers hired by the county government of Siaya continues.
Meanwhile, relatives of the late Sharlet Atieno are still camping at the river bank waiting for their daughter’s body to be recovered.
