Overseeing of the national exams is on high alert to avert irregularities. This has seen a new unique measure taken to control noise and alcohol consumption during the exam period.

Two exam centre managers in Meru were arrested on Tuedsay for going to work while drunk and failing to collect examination papers on time.

A well in Igembe Central, a centre manager is said to have failed to turn up at the sub-county headquarters to collect the papers forcing officials to deliver the exams to Karama Antuamuo Primary School.

Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has directed that all “noisy” night clubs, bars and social joints in Nairobi estates closed until the ongoing KCPE and KCSE exams are done.

“The centre managers are contracted by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) to ensure the exams are done. Any attempt to sabotage the examinations will not be entertained. Students have prepared for the exams for many years and all officers must take this exercise seriously,” Mr Nyagwanga said.

As a result or coincidentally,in a statement to newsrooms, Governor Sonko further  has tasked the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and security agencies to enforce a fresh order.

“Governor Sonko has directed the National Environment Management Authority, the Nairobi County Liquor Control Board and security agencies to ensure that the noise in estate is minimised,” reads the statement.

Sonko says that this will allow Class Eight and Form Four candidates to prepare well for their examinations.

Police on Wednesday also morning arrested a headteacher who showed up drunk to collect Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination papers in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County.

Mr. Peter Kamau Ndegwa, who is the headteacher of South Wales Primary School a private institution  staggered to the collection centre at the Nyandarua County Commissioner’s office demanding to be served first.

Another measure that would hurt liquor spree lovers was the one of Kenya National Examination council(knec) Chief Executive officer Mercy Karogo.

“The centre managers should not give lunch or fare to monitoring officers. Officers who demand the same should be reported to Knec through any of the channels available,” warned Karogo. Knec also warned that centre managers should not demand money from parents/guardians to entertain school guests who may include Knec monitoring officers. “This is normally a foundation of compromised examination management. As public officers, it is important to be aware of the Bribery Act 2016,” said (Knec) Chief Executive Officer Mercy Karogo.
