Sex education should be incorporated in the syllabus

 

Should parents  discuss reproductive health matters openly with their teenage girls and explain to them the importance of avoiding sex and reporting sexual assault.

In Kwale County a Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidate will have two certificates at the end of the year.

KCPE  candidate at Voroni Primary School  gave birth to a baby boy shortly after the exams kicked of.

The candidate is reported to have developed labour pains hours before the exams and was rushed to Kwale Hospital where she gave birth.

However the candidate was stable and that she wrote the mathematics test from her hospital bed.

Kwale County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo said the girl started having labour pains earlier in the day so she was taken to Kwale Hospital.

The examinations kicked off smoothly, with a total of 8,086 candidates across Kwale.

Mr Karuku said security was beefed up in all examination centres so they were not anticipating any problems.

“We have tightened security in all our institutions to ensure the examinations run smoothly on the three days,” he said.

The Class Eight candidate who was defiled by her teacher last weekend in Njoro, Nakuru County is now sitting her primary school examinations three days after the incident.

According to the head teacher, the 15- year-old pupil is in a stable condition and is ready for the the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams.

“The girl rehearsed with her colleagues on Monday. She looked jovial and determined,” said the head teacher, who added that the girl returned home after receiving treatment following the traumatising incident.

The local chief said the suspect, who was arrested after the incident, was charged in a Nakuru Court on Monday.

“The suspect was freed on a bond of Sh150,000,” said the chief.

The school was closed last week, a day before the pupil was sexually assaulted and only Standard Eight pupils were at the school when the incident happened.

Cases of defilement and underage  pregnancies have been reported.

Five girls from one primary school  dropped out after falling pregnant ,the girls, aged between 14 and 16 years, are the latest victims of increasing cases of defilement and teenage pregnancies in the county.

According to the school’s head teacher, George Ngadi, three of the pupils were in Class Eight and two were in Class Six.

“Two of them are three months pregnant, two are six months pregnant while one is five months pregnant.

This means three of them became pregnant during the November – December long holiday,” Mr Ngadi said. Speaking at the Narok Children Office yesterday, he said this year’s cases were more than last year’s, when the school recorded two cases.

According to Kenya’s Demographic Health Survey, Narok is leading in teenage pregnancy in the country at 46 per cent.

While in Kilifi more than 10 primary school girls are reported to be pregnant every month at Chonyi in Kilifi south constituency.

This is according to Gift a Girl Child organization founder Diana Mwangata who says there has been an increase in teenage pregnancies and school drop outs due to poverty in the area. Mwangata was accompanied by the county’s woman representative and education officer, they were speaking at Gandini Primary school where they distributed sanitary towels to 600 girls from 9 schools.
