Daring Abroad: Kenya Nurse faces jail over rape allegations in US

Nearly 600 nurses leave the country annually to seek greener pastures overseas due to  poor working conditions, poor remuneration, under-staffing in hospitals and lack of a proper career progression.

Most of those who have undergone specialized training in renal and ICU care mostly migrate to Canada, Australia and the US.

Well a 44-year-old Kenyan nurse Thomas Kamau Nganga has been charged with the rape of the elderly woman at a nursing home where has been working at Richmond, Virginia.

Kamau is facing a jail term in the US after he was caught by his colleagues trying to force himself on an elderly patient aged 72.

Acording to an administrator at the nursing home, Lexington Rehabilitation and Healthcare, confirmed that Kamau was fired immediately after the incidence before being reported to the American authorities.

Kamau was detained at Henrico County Jail with no bond and is due to appear in court in December. According to his personal details before the court, he is a married man with children.

According to the nursing home administrators, Kamau was taken through several background checks before starting his caregiver’s job at the facility six months ago.

“We are traumatized at a certain level but I think this community, in particular, is a very close and loving community and we’re helping each other to get through this,” the nursing home Administrator told ABC News.
