A 22-year-old man from Maguti Village in Kanyabala Location, Homa Bay County has committed suicide after his wife left him.

Reagan Odongo’s body was – on Wednesday morning – discovered hanging from a sisal rope tied to a tree in his parents’ compound.

Odongo’s wife, Quinter Achieng’, who is in her early twenties, ran away from her matrimonial home on Tuesday, October 16, after their wrangle-ridden marriage “became too much for her to bear”.

Odongo had left a suicide note in his house, saying: “Frustrations in life – due to my wife’s departure –, is the reason I have killed myself”.

Area acting chief, Simeon Onano, says the deceased wrote his wife’s phone on the suicide note, and ordered his parents to ensure that Achieng’ attends his funeral.

“In the note, Odongo said he had tried all methods of conflict resolution with his wife, but she was not showing signs of embracing behaviour change, and that the resultant frustration was why he resorted to killing himself,” said Chief Onano.

Odongo also apologised to his parents for his “distressful” and “selfish” action.

Homa Bay County commander, Marius Tum, says they have taken the deceased’s suicide note as investigations into his death begin. Odongo’s body was moved to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

Cases of suicide are on the rise in the country.

Stephen Mumbo jumped off the 17th floor of Delta Corner building in Westlands, Nairobi, in what is thought to have been suicide. Police, however, said they have launched investigations into the mysterious death, which they termed “suspicious”.

Mumbo was found lying motionless at the ledge of the building by his colleagues, who called for an ambulance and rushed him to hospital. He died at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi from injuries
