Nairobi county government has banned all ECDE graduation ceremonies in all public schools, saying teachers are using it to extort money from poor parents.
In a circular sent to all primary head teachers with pre-unit schools and all center managers for day nurseries, the Nairobi County Government through County executive for Education Mrs. Janet M. Ouko noted that the gradation ceremonies have been used by some schools to extort money from parents.
“We have noted with concern that schools are planning ECDE graduation ceremonies and charging parents between Kshs. 1000 to 1500. This is against the spirit of free ECDE being implemented by H.E the governor in Nairobi county. This is therefore to communicate a ban on all ECDE graduation ceremonies especially if they attract a charge to the parents,” read a statement signed by Mrs. Ouko
