Kenyans have been divided by opposition leader Raila Odinga’s calls for referendum.

Already, the referendum is shaping up to be a Raila-Ruto battle which could be a dress rehearsal of the 2022 presidential campaign.

It also seems that President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Mt. Kenya region are solely behind the referendum, leaving DP William Ruto in the cold.

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi, who were Raila’s biggest critics in the run up to the 2017 elections have taken to social media to suport the calls for a refurendum.

On Thursday, Ngunyi said that Raila is right on push for a referendum.

“On referendum, Raila is dead right. We ate a half-baked constitution. Now we are politically constipated. We must change “Katiba Mbichi”. What do you think?” Mutahi tweeted.

Moses Kuria also said that he will support the efforts to change the constitution. However, the legislator said that he will only do that if the idea is to ease the burden on Kenyans.

In a Facebook post directed at Raila Odinga, the Kuria said he agrees with the Opposition leader’s calls to repeal the supreme law but “these changes are about reducing the burden for Wanjiku.”

“It’s about reducing elective and nominated positions not adding positions. It’s not about adding the position of a Prime Minister or creating a parliamentary system. I hope you get this clearly,” Kuria said.

On Thursday, Raila maintained that Kenya will go to a referendum if it has to realise the goals of the Building Bridges initiative.

He said calls to change the constitution and the structure of government are tied to the peace initiative which followed the March 9 handshake.
