Mourinho has come under increasing pressure at United this season having led the Red Devils to just ten points from their opening seven games. Manchester United have also been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Championship outfit Derby before drawing their second Champions League game of the season last night against Valencia.

It means Mourinho’s men are without a home win since beating Leicester on the opening weekend of the season. They were also beaten 3-1 by West Ham on Saturday with Mourinho odds-on favourite to be the next Premier League manager to get the sack. And Manchester United legend Scholes was not holding back in his criticism of Mourinho.

“I’m actually slightly surprised he survived after Saturday, the performance was so bad,” Scholes said. “He’s coming out in press conferences constantly having a go at players, having at go at people above him because he’s not getting what he wants. “I think his mouth is out of control and I think he’s embarrassing the club.”

But after another insipid performance from United against Valencia, Mourinho responded to Scholes’s comments.

“I don’t need to know what he said,” Mourinho said.“He said what he wants to say, I’m not interested, honestly, I’m not interested.

“Freedom of speech, free country, you can say what you want.”

Jose Mourinho, who has cut a frustrated figure all season, also hit out at his team after the game.

“There were some improvements in our performance. We had probably a couple of the biggest chances to win it but I have accepted the result as a fair result,” he said.

“I said in pre-season last season was phenomenal to finish second. And I don’t say more than that.

“The players tried. They raised the level of their efforts. They raised the level of their intensity in spite of the fact we don’t have many with that intensity.

“We don’t have the technical quality to build from the back.

“We tried to do something we did well which was to stop a fast team on the counter attack. We knew we wouldn’t create 20 chances.

“Our attacking players aren’t in their best moments of confidence and individual level. We thought with three or four chances we would score and win the game.

“It is a not a bad result. Not a good result, but not bad.”
