Liverpool are set for a premier league milestone this weekend

Liverpool are sitting at the top of the  Premier League table at the moment, the only team to win each of their six matches so far.

It’s an impressive start to the season, and it’s their best ever, but it’s not quite a record. Right now they are tied with a few teams from history on points, and are behind a few on goal difference.

However, if they manage to beat Chelsea this weekend, it’ll break the record for the most number of wins to start a Premier League season ever.

Liverpool have won six out of six so far, but could they make it seven with a win over Chelsea?

If they beat Chelsea in the league, it’ll be the best ever start to a Premier League campaign

Five teams have managed to reach the feat of six wins from the first six games. This year’s Liverpool is one, along with Newcastle in 1994-95, Manchester City in 2016-17, as well as Chelsea in 2009-10 and in 2005-06.

Liverpool are fourth in those standings in terms of goal difference with 12, with Newcastle at the top with a fantastic 15, and City on 13. At the start of the 1994-95 season, Newcastle were scoring an average of 3.67 goals per game.

Newcastle’s winning start to that season was ended, perhaps fittingly, by Liverpool, when they drew 1-1 at St James’ Park. A string of bad results towards the end of the season ensured Newcastle finished in 6th place.

Newcastle fans will be longing for those days now with their team languishing in 18th place, still without a win this season.

Manchester City were also unable to convert their winning start to the 2016-17 season with a title win, ending in third place behind Spurs and Chelsea.

However, both times Chelsea won the first six games of the season, they ended the league in first place.

Only Manchester City and Chelsea are within touching distance of Liverpool at the moment as the two other undefeated teams, both sitting on 16 points.

So, although manager Jurgen Klopp is playing down claims that Liverpool are already a front runner this year, Liverpool do have a good chance of ending at the top of the table, especially if they manage to break the record and achieve seven wins in a row this weekend.

Chelsea will be tough opponents though, and Liverpool are coming straight off the back of a loss to Maurizio Sarri’s men in the Carabao Cup.
