Luke Shaw suffers serious head injury in England game against Spain

Blow: Shaw suffered a head injury during his first England appearance in three years

Luke Shaw is set to return to Manchester United’s medical team on Monday after leaving the England squad having suffered concussion in the Nations League defeat to Spain. Shaw had to be substituted early in the second half at Wembley following a collision with Spain’s Dani Carvajal and stayed at St George’s Park on Sunday to be monitored. However, the left-back will now return to United for further assessment, with Leicester’s Ben Chilwell having been drafted into the squad to replace him, while winger Demarai Gray has also been called up.

A statement from the Football Association read: ‘Luke Shaw remained at St. George’s Park today for further rest and monitoring having sustained concussion against Spain yesterday. He will return to his club tomorrow. It seems likely that Shaw will miss United’s trip to face Watford on Saturday with the Premier League having strict concussions guidelines which dictate that players cannot train until receiving clearance.

This injury represents a further setback for Shaw, who seemed to have finally got his career back on track having endured many difficulties after suffering a double leg break while playing for United against PSV in 2015. Luke Shaw will miss England’s friendly with Switzerland and will return to Manchester United on Monday. Shaw suffered a head injury in what was his first starting appearance for the Three Lions in three years against Spain in a Uefa Nations League match Saturday. The left-back was attended to by medical staff for seven minutes before he was stretchered off the pitch early on in the second half. The FA announced Shaw was “awake and alert” shortly after the final whistle at Wembley with the player later adding he was “doing fine” with a post on Twitter.

English football’s governing body has confirmed however the defender is not in contention for Tuesday’s match against the Swiss at the King Power Stadium and will return to Manchester today after being assessed throughout the day on Sunday.

Shaw has enjoyed a superb start to the 2018-19 season at Old Trafford and is the only outfield member of Jose Mourinho’s squad to have been ever-present in his starting XI in the opening four matches. United travel to Watford, one of only three sides in the Premier League to have made a perfect start to the season, on Saturday.
