Ladies! Beware of What ‘sponsors ‘can do

The murder of a second year student at Rongo University student on Wednesday have added on to rising cases of young girls who have died after being entangled with wealthy male Kenyans popularly known as ‘sponsors’.

Sharon Otieno’s body was discovered two days her abduction while in the company of Nation journalist Barrack Oduor.

She is said to have been narrating to Oduor a story where she accused a prominent politician of impregnating her.

An aide to Migori Governor Okoth Obado, Nicholas Oyamo, has since been arrested in connection to the abduction and murder.

Obado, on his part, disowned Oyamo, saying he was not party to what his PA may have been engaged in.

Apart from Otieno’s case, here are other young Kenyan girls who have died after being involved with wealthy men.

Carol Ngumbu

The 21-year old was killed after she was abducted alongside slain IEBC ICT manager Chris Msando.

The two had been on a night out when unknown assailants kidnapped them, before torturing Msando and killing them both.

Ngumbu had just completed her studies at the Karen campus of Kenya Medical Training College.

Veronica Muthoni

The 22-year old was among five people who perished in the Lake Nakuru helicopter crash that occurred on October 21 2017.

Muthoni was reported to have accompanied pilot, Captain Apollo Malowa , and four other Jubilee bloggers on a tour of Lake Nakuru after the group picked her at a club where they had been partying the night before the morning of the accident.

At the time of her death, she had recently graduated from the Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology.

Mercy Keino

The 25-year old University of Nairobi student died in 2011, shortly after attending a party hosted by then Juja MP William Kabogo.

She had been pursuing a master’s degree in Communications at the time of her death.

In a court inquiry to determine the nature of her death, Magistrate Peter Ndwiga ruled that Keino was not a victim of criminal homicide.

Kabogo was also cleared of any wrongdoing in Keino’s death.
