Reprieve as Tottenham ace avoids military service

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a major boost as Son Heung-min will be exempted from almost two-year military service after his aided his country, South Korea to a 2-1 win over Japan in the Asia games.

Military service is compulsory for every physically able man in South Korea despite their fame or fortune with men required to report for military service before attaining the age of 28.

Men are required to serve a minimum of 21 months in the military, however, the military service has been exempted for sportsmen who have flown the South Korean flag high as was the case with the team that performed exceptionally well in the 2002 World Cup reaching the semifinals of the tournament.

The win now means that Son will complete his five-year contract at Spurs. Japan who had kept four clean sheets into the final kept another after regular time ended 0-0 which as both teams headed into extra time.

Lee Seung-Woo opened the scoring for South Korea in the 93rd minute before Hwang Hee-Chan doubled their lead in the 101 minute.

Ayase Ueda pulled one back for Japan but it was a little too late as South Korea held on for the win to clinch the Asian Games.
