Aubameyang had a game to forget in the Gunners’ first away match of the season, which they lost 3-2. The Gabon international missed a golden opportunity to cancel out Pedro’s opener in the 19th minute after getting on the end of a cut-back from Hector Bellerin.

The 29-year-old somehow managed to blaze the ball over the bar from just outside the six-yard box, a miss which was punished less than a minute later when Alvaro Morata doubled the Blues’ advantage.

Aubameyang was bitterly disappointed to have spurned the chance to put his team on level terms and took to Twitter yesterday to reflect on his howler.

He tweeted: “Today I missed tomorrow must be better!!”

Aubameyang’s old Borussia Dortmund team-mate Henrikh Mkhitaryan pulled a goal back for the north Londoners before Alex Iwobi levelled the score before half-time, only for Marcos Alonso to pop up with the winner for Chelsea nine minutes from time.

Mkhitaryan was bitterly disappointed with the team’s performance, saying: “We didn’t start very well, conceded two goals, but then afterwards we found ourselves, believed in ourselves and then started playing better than them.

“We scored twice to equalise, scoring two goals in 10 minutes, and then maybe we had another two chances to score to win the game. Unfortunately, we didn’t take them.

“The second half was difficult because we looked a little bit tired and we didn’t create the opportunities to score.

“In the end, they scored the third goal and it was hard for us to come back. We did everything we could and I want to thank my team-mates.”

Arsenal, who are without a win in their opening two matches of the season, welcome West Ham to the Emirates on Saturday and will be looking to put on an impressive performance against Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

New Gunners chief Unai Emery is well aware of the pressure on his side to register their first win of the new campaign, saying: “Yes the demand is very high.

“We are going to prepare for [West Ham] like we did for Manchester City and like we did for Chelsea.

“And we will continue to improve on things for next week. Our performances are getting better.

“We will continue our process with the players, with our young players, also work on our system so that we do better on the pitch.”
