Robert Pires names his favourite Arsenal signing of the summer

Arsenal legend Robert Pires believes Unai Emery is the club’s most important signing of the summer. Former Paris Saint-Germain boss Emery was unveiled as Arsenal’s new head coach back in May following Arsene Wenger’s decision to step down as manager at the Emirates. The 46-year-old quickly got to work on improving his squad ahead of the 2018/19 campaign, with the Gunners’ defence in dire need of reinforcements.

Bernd Leno, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi all subsequently joined the club. Asked for Arsenal’s standout signing of the summer, Pires told Sky Sports: ‘The best signing for me is Unai Emery, the manager.

‘Of course I believe in the players, and especially the new players. He won in Spain. He won in France. ‘He has a lot of experience and I hope for him and Arsenal that he is successful with the club.’

Earlier this summer, Pires hailed Lichtsteiner as a ‘warrior’ following his free transfer from Juventus. The Frenchman told Goal: ‘I met Stephan and I think this is a good player for Arsenal. Some people are talking about the age, but I don’t care about this. ‘If he’s ready and wants to help Arsenal then he’s a good solution for Arsenal and Unai Emery.
