Huge blow for Uruguay ahead of Portugal match

Following Monday’s matches at the World Cup, we now know that Uruguay will take on Portugal in the last-16 in Russia.

The match will be held on Saturday evening at the Olimpiyskiy Stadion Fisht in Sochi.

On Tuesday, leading Uruguayan newspaper Ovacion have dropped a bomb on the national team.

It’s been confirmed that Atletico Madrid centre half Jose Maria Gimenez has already been ruled out of the Portugal game through injury.

The Portugal game could just be the start for Uruguay, as Ovacion also speculate that Jose Maria Gimenez could be missing for a lot longer as well.

There is a growing fear in the Uruguayan medical staff that Gimenez has suffered a muscle tear in his right quadriceps. Were that to be the case, the defender’s World Cup would be over.

The Atletico Madrid star missed Monday’s win over Russia.

One-time Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates filled in alongside Diego Godin in the 3-0 win over the World Cup hosts.

Gimenez played in Uruguay’s first two matches at the World Cup.
