#Match Report: Egypt falls to late Gimenez goal

Summary

Mohammed Salah was an unused sub as Egypt fell to a late Gimenez goal in the two teams’ World Cup 2018 Group A match.

Luis Suarez was guilty of wasting chances in what was a game of close calls. A good flowing Uruguay move from the right saw Varela put in a good cross for Luis Suarez but the Barcelona forward’s first time shot was off target. Egypt would then survive another scare after Suarez was then left unmarked following a corner. The Uruguay striker would unfortunately miskicked the ball leading his shot to find the side netting instead.

Edison Cavani did well to set up Suarez twice in the second half but his strike partner wasn”t having his best days in front of goal. Cavani hit the post and minutes later Uruguay got their lead. Sanchez delivered a freekick from the right and Gimenez rose highest to nod the ball into the net from seven yards.

The win leaves Uruguay second in the group after Russia (Both on 3 points)  while Egypt and Saudi Arabia remain goalless and pointless after the first round of games.
