Top six World Cup own goals

Manuel Rosas-1930

Manuel Rosas of Mexico has the unfortunate title of being the player who scored the first own goal in World Cup history. During the first World Cup in Uruguay in 1930, Rosas turned the ball into his own net as Mexico were beaten 3-0 by Chile.

Carlos Gamara-2006

The 2006 tournament saw the quickest own goal in World Cup history.

That accolade belongs to Carlos Gamarra, who nodded a David Beckham free-kick into his own net three minutes into Paraguay’s loss to England in Germany.

Andoni Zubizarreta 1998

France ’98 produced the most own goals in any tournament, six, including one from a legend of the game.

Andoni Zubizarreta was playing in his final tournament and in Spain’s clash with Nigeria, he secured his 124th cap. The script was meant to be one of celebration for a great of the game, but the keeper somehow misjudged a seemingly aimless cross-shot from Garba Lawal and parried the ball into his own net.

Berti Vorgts 1978

Berti Vogts had a long and distinguished playing career, spending his entire time at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Vogts won the World Cup in 1974, but in 1978 he had a massive hand in West Germany falling to an embarrassing defeat.

During the game with Austria, Vogts unfortunately turned the ball into his own net to hand the Austrians their first win over Germany in 47 years.

Jeff Agoos- 2002

The 2002 World Cup saw the only time two own goals were scored in the same match. Portugal’s Jorge Costa netted the first, but he was eclipsed by USA’s Jeff Agoos.

USA went on to win the game 3-2, but they had to come through a nerve-jangling final 20 minutes when Agoos scored in his own net—and what a goal it was.

A cross was whipped into the box and Agoos sensed danger. Unfortunately, he made things worse by smashing an unstoppable volley beyond Brad Friedel.

Andres Escobar-1994

An own goal that had tragic repercussions came in 1994. Colombia were well fancied for the 1994 iteration, but they crashed out at the group stage.

During their 2-1 defeat to USA, Andres Escobar stretched to cut out a cross but unfortunately turned the ball into his own net.

The goal had tragic consequences, as a matter of weeks later Escobar was gunned down in his hometown of Medellin.
