2018 World Cup: Mikel upholds Musa to start against Croatia

Super Eagles skipper, John Mikel Obi, has said Ahmed Musa must assume an essential role in their 2018 World Cup campaign, in view of his fine form. Musa returned to Russian side CSKA Moscow in January, in the wake of failing to get enough playing time at Leicester City in the Premier League. From that point forward, the 24-year-old has hit a purple patch both for club and nation.

It will be nothing unexpected if Gernot Rohr picks him to begin against Croatia, as he has outshone Chelsea’s Victor Moses in preparing. “Musa has been playing here for a long time and he’s back. For him (Musa) he needs the playing time. It was good for him to return to Russia. Now he’s back and playing regularly and he’s scoring goals,” said Mikel.

“He’s in better form and better shape and that will help us a lot. We are happy that the players playing in Russia will help us a lot.

“Maybe we can have more fans to support us. Everything is a plus for us and we hope to capitalize on those pluses,” Mikel Obi told reporters at the team’s camp in Russia.
