Former Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso has tipped Germany to make it to the semi finals of this World Cup, at the very least. Germany go into this year’s tournament as defending champions after they won in Brazil four years ago.
“The way they’ve been playing, it would be a massive surprise if they don’t make the semis, because they’re the champions and because of the new generation who’ve come into the team,” he said, adding that “Brazil are also right in there – I think those three are above the rest. Then there’s Argentina, France and maybe a surprise or two. Why not?”
Alonso himself won the trophy in 2010 with Spain.
