Rio Ferdinand backs Harry Kane as ‘perfect choice’ to captain England at World Cup

Tottenham striker Harry Kane was the “perfect choice” to captain England at the World Cup, according to former Three Lions skipper Rio Ferdinand

Kane was handed the armband on May after Gareth Southgate had delayed naming a permanent captain during qualifying in a bid to develop the leadership qualities of his squad and lessen the pressure on whomever eventually took on the role in Russia.

The striker, who is not skipper at Spurs, was selected ahead of Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Spurs team-mate Eric Dier, both of whom wore the armband since Wayne Rooney’s retirement.

Southgate picked Kane as captain because the forward would “set the standard every day” for his team-mates, a facet that convinces Ferdinand he is the right man for the job.
