FIFA World Cup Russia 2018: A toxic World Cup for Australia

A ball hasn’t been kicked in the World Cup in Russia and yet the atmosphere in many of the dressing rooms is toxic.

From Argentina to Spain through to France and England, many have been involved in controversial instances in the lead up to the tournament.

Tim Cahill was very close to starting what will be his fourth World Cup, however, the coach Bert van Marwijk accused him of wanting to go only for commercial reasons.

Cahill is the image of Caltex, a fuel company and one of the biggest sponsors of the Australian Football Federation, and that raised suspicions among fans and the Australian press.
