Fiorentina centre-back German Pezzella, a rather unknown name alongside the heavyweights of Argentina, has been left out of the World Cup squad. His inclusion would have made more sense instead of Gabriel Mercado, who recently encountered an injury against Real Betis.
Should Mercado fail to recover in time for the tournament, Argentina will be forced to field a defence scarce of experience. German Pezzella could have extended a helping hand in that case. With Pezzella now left out of the 23-man squad, all we can do is pray that Sampaoli doesn’t have to regret his decision in the FIFA World Cup.
