Was Nelson Mandela the 1st black President of South Africa?


Human rights activist Nelson Mandela, who was inaugurated as the President of South Africa on May 10, 1994, was the first black leader of the country. The Nobel Peace Prize winner spent 27 years of his life as a political prisoner of the South African government. He was the face of the anti-apartheid movement both within his country and internationally.
