Hostels across universities of Kenya have turned into prostitution, criminal , and radicalisation hubs as per a report by the Commission for University Education (CUE). The report says that universities and their hostels have become meeting points for criminals.
“There are cases of active radicalisation cells in universities. Students are colluding with each other in hiding crime,” the report says.
It further adds university hostels have prostitution rackets and cases of organised crimes where students are involved have increased.“Ethnic and political alliances where national politicians engage university students during political campaigns; and laxity or little attention being given to security concerns in universities and constituent colleges are rife,” the report adds.
The report was presented to Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed last week. The government is now studying it and will take action accordingly.
