Women from Uasin Gishu County are among the 1200 reformed brewers who have graduated following weeks of training on alternative income generating practices.
The County Government of Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo and West Pokot sponsored 1200 women in a training that will see them shun alcohol brewing.
During the training undertaken at Empowering Lives International Centre in Ilula, Uasin Gishu County, the women were taught on alternative ways to earn a living.
Governor Jackson Mandago attended the graduation ceremony held at Iten Grounds, Iten Town in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
When he rose to speak, Mandago “choristered” a Kalenjin song that teaches about the relationship between poverty and alcohol.
“It is encouraging when women decide to shun brewing. This means the source has been conquered, I have faith that this will bring about the change that we have always thought of,” said Mandago.
Mandago, however, called on the government to bring back the Chiefs’ Act, which gives divisional administration powers to discipline.
This, Governor Mandago says, will also help in fighting alcoholism and alleviating poverty. “These youth have been given chances to study for free in technical colleges, it will be disturbing when they continue with idleness.”
Mandago also promised to spearhead training sessions for the reformed women at Chebororwa Agricultural Training Centre.
“…I will see to it that the (women) are trained in agricultural practices that will help them as they take a new path in life,” added Mandago.
Governor Tolgos said: “…when a mother changes for the better, the society will yield to the change. This will lead to a good society.”
“Alcohol has been affecting development but we are happy today because we are marking a whole new beginning,” said Tolgos.
Governor Tolgos also advised the women to form groups so as to benefit from several government opportunities including loans and tenders.
Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Wisley Rotich and top officers from Baringo and West Pokot also attended the function.
Uasin Gishu CEC for Health Everlyne Rotich and Alcoholic Drinks Control Board Director Silas Boit were among county officials who were present at the event.
