Many could claim to know the history of the fourth President of Kenya but there are a few important things you probably do not know about Uhuru Kenyatta.
Apart from being son of the first president of Kenya, Uhuru has some features that make him unique in his own way. And as the president plans to celebrate his birthday as he turns 55 years old, here is the history of how Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and Mama Ngina Kenyatta came to bring this man to earth on October 26, 1961, two years before Kenya gained independence.
If Uhuru was born on this day then that means he was conceived in January of the same year. And it was in Maralal, Samburu where he was conceived. According to his biography, Hard Tackle, The Life Of Uhuru Kenyatta, by Irungu Thatiah, Jomo Kenyatta was jailed at Lokituang after the infamous Kapenguria trials.
Kenyatta would be fed on Scotch Whisky by the colonialists in a bid to deteriorate his health through liver cirrhosis but the opposite worked in his favour. He grew energetic and healthy. They therefore opted to transfer him to Maralal where the detention orders were lowered to mere restriction. Jomo was freed in August 1961 and went back to Gatundu with his pregnant wife. In October that year, Uhuru Kenyatta was born. This explains why Uhuru is sometimes referred to as the Son of Samburu, owing to the fact that he was conceived there.
President Uhuru even today holds Samburu in high regard. During his presidential campaigns in 2002 and 2013, Uhuru would fly out to Samburu and spend days in Maralal. In 2013, he is said to have spent four nights in Maralal despite the area having very few registered voters. Uhuru Kenyatta was born and brought up at Ichaweri, Gatundu township. He was conceived in colonial jail but born outside one.
