Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi on Tuesday found himself in trouble with a section of Kenyans on Twitter (KoT) after ordering the arrest of street beggars in Meru county and their accomplices, who bring them to the county streets.
Issuing the order, the county boss lamented that many beggars within the town whom he accused of enriching themselves by misusing other people.
He exclaimed: “All the people who bring in beggars to the streets should be arrested together with the beggars.”
However, he urged the people living with disabilities who are on the streets to ensure that they enroll with the newly launched Sacco that will aid them in making them self-reliant.
He revealed that some tenders will be advertised separately for people living with disabilities to avoid cases of exploitation.
Kenyans have taken to the social media to troll the first time governor argue that his move is insensitive and unfair as it is only targetting the ‘small person’ instead of focusing on improving their livelihoods.
