Fed up with how their leaders conduct business, residents of Karare area in Marsabit County have protested against what they termed ‘leaders prioritising the wrong things while ignoring the more serious and critical aspects’.
Local leaders had earlier called the locals for a meeting to drum up support to establish a municipality in the county but they were in for a surprise.
The locals showed up with bottles of muddy water and placed them on the “high table” where the dignitaries were to occupy during the meeting.
That was not a disrespect; it was a protest served cold. The locals said they had decided on the move as a way of showing their displeasure on water contamination and shortage in the area.
“Our problem is water, not a municipality,” the residents told the visiting delegation.
In January, 147 camels died after drinking contaminated water in Karare and Elehadi villages in Marsabit North Horr sub-county.
