Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel wants to make a return to the club

Peter Schmeichel would gladly take the opportunity to serve as Manchester United’s Director of Football.

The creation of that post was a borne of contention between Jose Mourinho and Old Trafford hierarchy and the departure of the Portuguese manager could pave way for the creation of the position. The former keeper is well aware with the scrutiny that comes with the position but he is ready to face them should it be created and be given to him.

“I’m actually thinking about putting my name in there. It’s a tough thing to find out about yourself, everyone looks at you; the scrutiny, and I’m not afraid of that. It’s also a really big change in what I’ve done.” the Danish told BBC Radio Live.

“I really want to get involved in football again at some point. I know I’m getting older, but my life has just turned out a different way after I retired from football. I’m considering: ‘Do I have the qualities?’ And if I come up to an answer to that question, then I will put my name in the hat. I’ll have a good think about this over Christmas and New Year and make a decision about it.” he added.

The father of Leicester City’s Kasper keeper also added that for Man United to succeed, they need to get their identity back and suggested a Director of Football position should go to a person who identifies with the club’s past glorious history.

“What’s really important is to get the Manchester United culture back and the identity back. I would like to see the job go to someone who has played there, and can bring some of that Sir Alex [Ferguson] mentality back in the whole of the football club,” he said.

Schmeichel won five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League in an eight-year stint under Sir Alex Ferguson.
